There was no recipe, no real story in the works when I took it. I got these black radishes in my veggie box one time several years ago and quickly shot this photo. I found it again recently and for some reason, fell in love with it. Maybe it’s the starkness of a BLACK vegetable. It’s not something you talk about when talking about the “rainbow” we are supposed to eat. Black isn’t even in the rainbow, right? This radish was another reminder of how surprising nature is and how much more the food world has to offer outside of the typical fruits and veggies offered at grocery stores.
I learned a lot about living more sustainably while getting veggies from a farm. That’s just one of the bits I want to pass that along to the Tablavie community. Though Tablavie has been around for awhile, I haven’t made it my life’s work. (Some of my subscribers may have been around from the beginning and followed me as I have made the twists and turns in my life for the last 7 years—Thanks for being loyal.)
It’s time for that now and I I have determined to go back to where it all started and offer all sorts of tools from an actual low-cost weekly menu plan service (coming in early 2015) to a free newsletter of tips and recipes as well as my blog for all who find their way here. In the near future I hope to have some real food convenience foods as well as e-books with collections of recipes available for those who want more than just words.
Now…I can’t just leave you hanging on the black radish with absolutely nothing, right? So here’s the tip, don’t try to eat it raw. It’s a bit fibrous, but cooks nicely in a stirfry or you can roast it like any other root. The other tip is look for a CSA (community supported agriculture) in your area to find local farmers who deliver produce boxes. It’s a great way to learn to eat what’s in season, and I will be here to help you when you get the odd things in your box.
